The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council Regional Police Academy and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy have been suspended following an investigation by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
Videos of cadets with the police academy held at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen show students performing training exercises with their instructor.
The videos prompted an investigation by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement after concerns over excessive force, CBS 4 News first reported.
“During a defensive tactic training session, video recording was conducted for the purposes of cadet instruction and feedback,” the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council said in a statement to CBS 4 News. “Video feedback had not been previously utilized by LRGVDC Police Academy and after evaluating this practice and as result of this incident, this method will not be used in the future.”
The academies will be suspended pending the outcome of the separate investigations.
The suspension of the Sheriff’s Office training academy is not related to that of the regional police academy held at TSTC.
Details on reasoning behind the suspension of the Sheriff’s Office training academy have not been released.
