Victims of fatal head-on crash in Roma identified

Authorities have identified two drivers killed in a head-on crash Friday evening.

The fatal crash occurred at about 6:16 p.m. on U.S. Highway 83, approximately four miles north of Roma.

Investigation reveals a 2003 Ford Ranger pick-up was traveling southbound when, for unknown reasons, it drove onto the wrong side of the road and struck a 2013 Buick Verano that was traveling northbound.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ford Ranger has been identified as 53-year-old Aureliano Soza of Roma. The driver of the Buick Verano has been identified as 26-year-old Rosa Delia Gomez of Roma.

A female passenger, identified only as a 53-year-old woman, was taken to a McAllen hospital with serious bodily injuries.

Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including the Roma Fire Department, Roma Police Department, Escobares Fire Department, Salineno Volunteer Fire Department, Starr County Emergency Medical Service, Starr County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.

DPS continues to further investigate the crash.
