Traffic Stop Turns Into Huge Drug Bust For Sheriff’s Department

Local News

A routine traffic stop turns into a major drug bust for the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department.

This week, deputies arrested Juan Antonio Montes Cornejo, a Mexican national, for transporting almost half a million dollars’ worth of cocaine. Cornejo allegedly hid the drugs inside a golf bag and an ice chest. He was stopped after a traffic violation in Harlingen near the intersection of Bass Boulevard and West Business 83.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, “There are approximately about 49 pounds of coke. The total value on something like that. It varies a little bit, but it would have been close to about $500,000 worth of cocaine seized.”

The sheriff believes the drugs were going to be transported out of the Rio Grande Valley. Cornejo is currently behind bars at the Cameron County Jail.
