Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure Over $4 Million Worth of Marijuana

The Texas Department of Public Safety seized more than 800 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $4 million, during a traffic stop on Tuesday, June 6 in Starr County.

At about 7:40 a.m., a DPS Trooper attempted to stop a 2008 Saturn Vue, on U.S. 83 in Rio Grande City for a traffic violation. The vehicle evaded law enforcement before eventually coming to a stop. The driver then fled on foot. After an extensive search, law enforcement was unable to locate the driver.  

Troopers subsequently discovered 70 bundles of marijuana, totaling 801 pounds, worth $4,861,269, in the rear back seat and cargo area of the Saturn.    

This case remains under investigation.
