The Texas Rangers are investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Brownsville.

The Texas Rangers are investigating after a Cameron County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in Brownsville.

The deadly shooting occurred on the 2600 block of Avenida Florencia just after 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was made by a mother who said that her son, 23-year-old Luis Yair Alvarez, was armed with a knife and was about to assault her and her daughter.

That’s when, according to the Sheriff’s Office, Alvarez grabbed the phone and said, “I have a gun and knife, don’t try to arrest me…it’s kill me.”

Deputies say when they arrived, Alvarez walked towards them, but didn’t drop the knife, prompting the shooting.  Alvarez died as a result of his injuries.

The identity of the deputy has not been released. Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said Tuesday that the officer is on paid administrative leave.

Lucio said the Texas Rangers will take the lead in the ongoing investigation.
