Texas police officers go through Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Recertification

Local News

“Texas leads the nation in alcohol-impaired fatality accidents,” said City of Irving Police Officer Stephen Burres. “For 2014, I think we had 1446 people killed just be drunk drivers.”

And that’s why hundreds of officers across the state are going through a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Recertification class.

“We are re-certifying them and giving them the latest updates into the standardized field sobriety testing manual,” said Officer Burres.

Troopers need to be recertified every couple years, sometimes because of a change in terminology, or because of a change in the way DUI tests are conducted based on new information and data.

“It could be just simple wording, like ‘Look, we’re changing this word to this word. It makes more sense, this is an issue that came up in court, this is greater clarification’, or we’re actually  changing the way we score a test or something,” said Officer Burres. “Like ‘We used to do this in one second, now we’re doing it in two seconds’. Something along that line.”

And though the legal drinking limit is .08, you can still face prosecution, even if the breathalizer indicates you have a lower blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

“But we have a two-pronged law in Texas,” said Officer Burres. “If you’re not .08, but you’ve lost the use of your normal mental and physical faculties, then you can still be arrested for DWI. The difference is, you won’t have a drivers license suspension.”

Which is why Officer Burres suggests planning your driving situation in advance before you go out on the town this holiday.

“Go out and have a Merry Christmas this holiday season, just make sure you watch the alcohol intake and take some steps to make sure you get home safely,” said Burres.
