Texas Lt. Governor Suggests Building Barrier between Brownsville and Falcon Lake

Local News

The Texas Lt. Governor had a lot to say about border security recently after meeting with the President in Washington D.C. and touring with him in the Rio Grande Valley last week.

Dan Patrick offered to help fund the border wall and suggested building a building a barrier through the Rio Grande Valley.

“We need this wall from Brownsville to Falcon Lake, that’s pretty much the stretch of land where we have big cities, midsize cities and small cities, because that’s where most people are coming,” Patrick said.

At a business event in Austin, Patrick claimed half of the people who cross the border illegally in the country come from this area, and that would push them into what he called “no man’s land” where border patrol and cameras could stop them.

Although according to figures from the Department of Homeland Security, apprehensions of undocumented immigrants at the Texas border are down by almost 50 percent since 2000.

“Anyone who says we don’t need a fence or a wall or a barrier or more law-enforcement, they’re deceiving the American people,” Patrick said.

Patrick was immediately criticized by Texas lawmakers when suggesting Texas build the wall in areas where it is needed, and getting reimbursed by the federal government.

Even Governor Greg Abbot was skeptical of the idea, telling a San Antonio News outlet that the federal government is not stepping up.

This comes at a time when Valley congressmen are also chiding the administration for their determination to build the wall.

“You want to spend billions of dollars on the wall, I will spend $100 on a ladder that will take care of that wall,” said Congressman Henry Cuellar.

Patrick reportedly promised $800 million in the state budget for the border wall.

At this point, it is unclear which Texas agency would be in charge of overseeing the construction of it.

The Texas House Democratic Caucus, blasted the idea. Saying the state needs to build schools, not walls.
