Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Brownsville Independent School District, the Brownsville Community Foundation and the fall 2019 Youth in Philanthropy class welcome Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott for a special ceremony.

Student groups from each of the six Brownsville high schools work with local non-profits and award the most deserving organizations with volunteer hours and the grand prize in the form of a monetary contribution.

“By participating in the Brownsville Youth in Philanthropy program, you are learning perhaps the most important life lesson: how to stay connected by giving of yourselves to help others in your community who are in great need.” Said Mrs. Abbott.

These students are part of the classroom where they get class credit as well as connecting them in the community. The district leaves it’s also a good opportunity and good for helping them get into a good college.

Erika Sikes, Brownsville ISD Career Placement Officer, “They sit in an actual class. They get class credit, but at the same time they get the opportunity to learn about the non-profit world, philanthropy and careers in the philanthropic world.”

The schools are now on their ninth semester of giving back and completed by an estimated 1,500 students. Organizers believe the initiative can help inspire students for a better community.

Dr. Diane Garza, Brownsville Community Foundation, “Wherever they may go and whatever they may want to do. There are ways to do that in the non-profit world.”

“This is my top priority. It is to encourage Texans to give back through volunteerism and service.” Added Mrs. Abbott.

The Youth in Philanthropy program is now on its fifth year of giving back and has been completed by approximately 1,500 students.
