Texas Department of Criminal Justice Bus Rolls Over

Local News

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate a rollover bus crash that left more than a dozen inmates injured near Raymondville.

It happened just before 7:30 this morning near the intersection of Highway 186 and FM 1834.

Texas DPS and TxDOT are working together to reconstruct the scene of the crash as well as clean up any sort of debris that was left behind.

In a statement sent to us from the Department of Criminal Justice, it said “The bus was traveling from the Segovia-Lopez Complex to the Willacy Facility. It appears that a vehicle stopped abruptly in front of the bus. In an effort to avoid crashing into the car, the driver lost control and hit a utility pole.”

DPS Investigators say fog and drizzle were possible factors in the accident. The 18 people in the bus at the time all suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The 16 inmates and 2 staff members who were involved in the crash are at local hospitals in the Harlingen area recovering from their injuries.

The Department of Criminal Justice confirms, the two correctional officers involved in the accident have been released from the hospital. 14 of the 16 inmates were also discharged. The other two may be staying overnight for observation.
