Texas A&M Welcomes First Student to McAllen Campus

Local News

Texas A&M University is beginning to welcome its inaugural class to the A&M Center in McAllen.

The university announced the very first student to be accepted into the Aerospace Engineering program.

Marco Piña – 1st Texas A&M Higher Education Center Student said, “At first when I got the call, I freaked out. I didn’t freak out, but I froze. And then I was like, get it together. Like this is awesome.”

Being an engineer has been a dream for Marco since he was in the third grade. And to be accepted into one of the most distinguished schools in the country is an accomplishment in itself.

But to be accepted into Texas A&M’s newest school in the valley, is a blessing for both him and his family.

“It’s more convenient. It’s going to save me and my family more money, because for financial aid, I didn’t get much.”

Marco’s always been involved in extra curricular activities. He’s the student body president at his school and he loves to play sports. But school always come before the grid iron.

“At first i wanted to go into mechanical, but then i saw aerospace. And then I read up on it, did research. That’s when i found out it was for me because i want to work in the space industry.”

Marco hopes to one day work for NASA or SpaceX in Brownsville. But for now, he’ll enjoy the perks of being an Aggie.

“The tradition there is probably one of the best that I’ve seen out of all the colleges. It’s just really crazy, knowing how the alumni is and the network is. Everybody’s so close together. No matter what, as long as you have that Aggie ring, they’re always going to help you out.”
