Jose Vigil, 17, of Mission admitted to police he was being paid $250 for each of the undocumented migrants he was transporting in the Lyft ride.
Police spotted the white Volkswagen Jetta, Vigil hailed for a ride on FM 886 without front licence plates. The driver was pulled over by Sullivan City police at a near by Stripes store and the officer noticed the two passengers in the back seat displayed characteristics of an undocumented migrant with several layers of clothing muddy and wet.
Vigil advised the officer the Lyft driver had nothing to do with smuggling attempt.
“The officers started questioning the driver, he said he was the Lyft driver and said he had picked up the passenger. Through our investigation, it was uncovered there was a couple of people in the backseat slumped over,” said Sullivan City Police Chief Richard Ozuna.
The two undocumented migrants were from Guatemala. They were taken into custody of Border Patrol.
A Mission teen has been charged with smuggling of persons after hailing a Lyft driver to smuggle two undocumented immigrants in Sullivan City.
According to police, Jose Vigil was arrested after the Lyft driver was pulled over on a routine traffic stop for not having license plates.
Vigil is said to have paid for the Lyft ride with his mom’s credit card to smuggle the undocumented immigrants, according to police.
Public records state the offense date was April 5. Vigil was booked April 6 and released April 7. He received a $10,000 cash surety bond.
