Students Observe Ash Wednesday

Local News

Many Catholics in the Rio Grande Valley observe Ash Wednesday. The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville estimates there are over a million Catholics in the Rio Grande Valley.

The religious holiday marks the beginning of Lent in the Catholic Religion and some Christian denominations.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley held a special mass in observance of the holiday. We met up with Bishop Daniel Flores and asked why it was important for him to visit students.

Bishop Daniel E. Flores says, “It’s a very important thing to kind of show to the students the importance of their Christian witness, catholic witness and to help them by being together with them to start in a good way. It’s a great joy for me. I enjoy coming every year.”

The Lent season lasts approximately 40 days. Many tend to give up something to represent a religious sacrifice.
The bishop will be in Brownsville to conduct another mass later this afternoon.
