Local organizations come together to raise awareness for local manufacturing.
The Brownsville Economic Development Council (BEDC), Brownsville Independent School District and Texas Southmost College (TSC) and Workforce Cameron team up with local manufacturers.
They held the first Industry Expo in which students got to visit some of the six manufacturing plants.
Afterwards they met at the TSC ITEC Campus. Students had the opportunity to learn career advancing opportunities such as work etiquette and interview skills.
Melinda Rodriguez TSC’s VP Institutional Advancement and Workforce Training says, “I think the greatest indicator [of success] is their interaction with the companies and their reactions when they visit the facilities. It was quite positive not only for the students but also the employers.”
“The reason the manufacturers get involved is because they have positions that they need to fill and they are looking for qualified people,” says Jose Herrera, Interim President – BEDC.
Part of this event’s message was to let students know that skilled jobs are available locally.
Event organizers say they plan to host more events like this in the years to come.
