MCALLEN, Texas – A vehicle rams through a school fence injuring a high school student from McAllen.
The student was waiting for a school bus when the crash happened at Alvarez Elementry. Both school district officials and McAllen Police are not releasing very many details about the incident. Witness on the scene said they feared the worst when they saw the aftermath of the accident.
Elva Zavala who lives next to Alvarez Elementary described the fear she felt after hearing a bang at around 7:30 a.m. this morning. She ran out to see children lying on the ground. “With that bang, the gas and electricity went out and then first thing we saw were police cars. I saw four children thrown on the ground in the fence.”
Authorities can only say the accident is under investigation but the car ended up nearly 50 yards from the parking lot with a utility pole on top of the car. “I don’t know how it happened but the car struck children and there were like four children. They took one to the hospital. I also understand they took the owner too. I believe she is a teacher.” said Zavala.
Neither the district or police would confirm the identity of the driver involved in the accident. District officials say the student was transferred to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but remains hospitalized this evening. The accident also knocked out the school’s power for a short time forcing officials to move students into the gym until it was restored.
