State of the Port Address

Local News

It’s one of the largest economic drivers in the Rio Grande Valley and they’re opening up their books to the public. Today the Port of Brownsville issues the State of the Port Address.

Each year the Port of Brownsville reaches out to some of its consumers and business partners to tell them a little bit of what happened in the previous year. In this case it’s 2018.

Today we were able to speak with the special guest speaker Mr. John Roberts. He was not only here to talk about the port, but what all the numbers mean.

“I think the main challenge I want to put forward is to provide context for what’s happening at the port and what’s happening in the economy overall and the challenges that represents.” Said Mr. Roberts.

We’re talking about a lot of investments, a lot of money in trade, what exactly does the port do for the region?

“It’s enormous for the region. To try to take the port out of the region, I think, would not only be devastating but would really miss out on the kinds of opportunities that are forth coming.” Responded Mr. Roberts.

Earlier today we had a chance to speak with the Port Director and port leaders, here’s what they had to say.

“We exceeded the $24 Million threshold in operating revenues for the first time in our history so from that perspective that’s good and very important. It also helps us with the ability to generate the revenue necessary to operate and re-invest in the port.” Said Eduardo Campirano, Port Director and CEO for the port of Brownsville.

“We’re very proud of the businesses that are expecting to announce their opening in the next year or two. What that’s going to allow is tremendous job growth in our region.” Said John Reed Chairman of the Brownsville Navigation District.

According to recent figures the port contributes over $2 billion to the regional economy and close to 44,000 jobs statewide.
