The State, along with the Cameron County District Attorney’s office, has filed a petition seeking the removal of the Vice President of the Brownsville Independent School District Board.

According to the DA’s office, the petition for the removal of Sylvia P. Atkinson has been assigned to the 107th District Court.

Senior Judge J. Miguel Banales has been assigned to oversee the removal action, after Judge Benjamin Euresti recused himself.

“Since no one has filed a petition for removal of Atkinson the District Attorney felt it his duty to seek the removal of Atkinson” reads the release.

Atkinson is accused in an eight count federal indictment of several crimes of official misconduct including federal program fraud and bribery.

The petition  says Atkinson solicited and accepted bribes, accepted and solicited prohibited gift cards and failed to disclose a gift.

Atkison was indicted in December. She is charged  with one count of conspiracy, one count of bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds, and six counts of travel act-state law bribery.
