A local organization is raising money to provide scholarships for students from south and west Texas.

The South Texas Academic Rising Scholars (STARS), held its 14th Annual ‘Extravaganza’ that featured comedian Jay Leno. With the help of the community and sponsors, the organization is aiming to raise nearly $2 million for scholarships.

A previous recipient encourages students to look into the scholarship

Michael Donovan, UTRGV Student said, “It takes the burden off my parents and I. It helps me focus more in school and keeps me motivated. Scholarships are very important because they can help in the long run. You don’t want to end up in debt at the end of college and it’s much easier to deal with if you know you have that back up.”

The deadline to apply for a STARS Scholarship is March 31st. Recipients will receive the funds in August.
