Sheriff Rene “Orta” Fuentes announced Monday that the Starr County Detention Center is suspending all inmate visitations.
In a release, the Sheriff’s office says the suspension is effective immediately.
These measures are only taken to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
This suspension is being taken as a precautionary measure and to follow and comply with the recommendation of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and only applies to public visitations.
Individuals that are carrying out law enforcement activities, such as probation and parole officers, are not prohibited from entering the jail and are not included in the suspension.
The release says the suspension will be in place until Governor Gregg Abbot lifts the disaster declaration he announced Friday.
As of today, no cases of coronavirus have been found in the Rio Grande Valley.
