Starr County HIDTA officials are investigating after authorities found eight bundles of marijuana in an SUV after the driver abandoned the vehicle.

Authorities say that on Thursday, Sept. 26, HIDTA investigators attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Chevy Tahoe after they noticed the vehicle had an expired registration.

The Tahoe was at La Prieta Rd. and turned on Old Highway 83 when investigators began following the vehicle. According to officials, the driver refused to stop and made a U-turn on FM 649, then began traveling south.

The driver then turned back onto La Prieta Rd. and made it all the way to the river banks where they jumped into the river and swam in to Mexico, according to officials.

Investigators seized 577 pounds of marijuana as well as the 2002 Tahoe.
