South Padre Island issues local state of disaster declaration

The city of South Padre Island issued a local state of disaster declaration for COVID-19.

The disaster declaration will cancel all special event permits effective at 7 p.m. Monday. According to a release, special event equipment should be removed within 24 hours, and any activity after the deadline will be in direct violation of city orders.

The city strongly encourages that all businesses and restaurants follow the CDC’s recommendations in preventing the spread of this virus.

Officials are also discouraging large groups from gathering and urging them to follow CDC recommendations.

The release adds Island Metro will continue to operate, adding busses have increased cleaning protocols.

According to the release, the following city facilities will be closed to the public:

  • Community Center
  • Visitor Center
  • Multi-Modal Lobby
  • Convention Centre
