SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – It’s been nearly a month since thousands of visitors started making their way back to South Padre Island.
Now that bars are reopening at 25 percent capacity and restaurants are boosting theirs to 50 percent, island leaders said they are expecting to see over 50,000 visitors during Memorial Day weekend.
“We’ll have our large fireworks displaying that the city puts on that will be on Sunday and that always brings a lot of people because it’s kind of the official opening of summer,” said Convention and Visitors Bureau Director, Ed Caum.
In the past three weeks, approximately half a million people have crossed over to the island.
“We see how many cars go back and fourth across the bridge and then we multiply those numbers by 2.5 because that’s the industry average because not all cars all full,” Caum added.
SPI officials are expected to release this weekend’s rules and tips on Thursday.
