A man accused of brutally murdering his parents with an ax was in 103rd District Court Thursday. 52 year old, Joel Collazo’s capital murder trial is set for April 17th, 2017. Collazo was indicted in last February for the deaths of his parents, Jesus Collazo Sr., 86, and Juanita Collazo, 83.
According to Brownsville Police, the couple was beaten over the head with an ax handle. Their bodies were found by Brownsville police January 26th at the 100 block of west Los Ebanos after a welfare concern call from another son. According to investigators, Collazo admitted to killing his father. Mr. and Mrs. Collazo’s bodies were found covered in gasoline which indicates Collazo may have planned to burn them, according to previous reports with Brownsville Police.
District Court Judge Janet Leal expects the capital murder trial to last up to two weeks. If convicted of capital murder, Collazo faces life in prison. According to Thursday’s pre-trial hearing, prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. Judge Leal said she will request a larger courtroom to accommodate a larger jury pool. On April 6th, Collazo’s attorney is requesting to have a video statement excluded from evidence. Collazo remains jailed on a $2 million bond.
