Six people are in the hospital following a vehicle pursuit that ended in Penitas.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the McAllen Border Patrol Station was notified by Penitas police on Sunday of a pursuit heading toward McAllen and requested assistance.

The report stated that units from the Border Patrol and a National Guard helicopter responded to the scene. That’s when they learned a black Ford Mustang crashed into a Chevrolet Malibu carrying two passengers.

CBP said the driver of the Malibu was taken to the hospital by helicopter with critical injuries. All occupants in the Mustang were also taken to the hospital for medical evaluation

An investigation revealed that the driver of the Mustang, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, evaded authorities because he was smuggling three undocumented immigrants, according to CBP.

Sullivan City police took the driver into custody.

The case remains under investigation.
