Severe weather thunders across Rio Grande Valley Saturday morning

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas — Thunderstorms continue across the Rio Grande Valley Saturday morning, producing hail and mass amounts of rain.

There are currently severe thunderstorm warnings in effect for all of Cameron and Hidalgo County, and portions of Starr and Willacy County as the storms continue to move east.

Additionally, portions of Hidalgo County are under an Areal Flood Advisory.

Radar indicates reports of penny-size hail, one to two inches of rain per hour, and wind speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Hail is reported in La Joya, Alton, and other areas of southern Hidalgo County.

Additionally in these areas, rainfall of up to three inches is reported.

A Marginal Severe Weather Outlook continues throughout the day for the Rio Grande Valley.

We will continue to update you as the storm develops.

UPDATE: 8:40 a.m. — A building is reported on fire on South Padre Island.

The cause of the fire is unknown, however, National Weather Service reports indicate it was caused by a lightning strike.
