BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The San Benito CISD taking students to court in a case involving education and careers. It is a special partnership with Cameron County to teach students about criminal justice with real cases. The Cameron County 197th District Court inviting San Benito High School Law Enforcement students to observe a typical day in the courtroom.

David Means, San Benito High School Law Enforcement Teacher, “Right now we’re sitting in on hearings. It’s very interesting, very eye opening for our kids.”

The cases, the rulings and procedures are all real. Approximately 70 students observe criminal, civil and family matter cases just like they would in their prospective careers.

Lizette Lucio, San Benito High School Law Enforcement Teacher, “It’s really important to get our students out of the classroom and into the real-world scenarios. Students that we did bring into the courtroom are all seniors, that way they can practice what we taught in school.”

The program is part of the San Benito School Districts 15 options available for students. A program meant to expose them to real world experience in hopes of inspiring interest in specific careers. This is the first time in over five years since the school district visits a courtroom like this. Some of the teachers say that even in the three hour sessions, they’ve already had plenty of questions about the courtroom process for lessons they can take to the classroom and beyond.

In addition to hearings, the group got to attend a family-matter trial case for exposure to their career pathway.
