SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – The holidays have arrived. The Rio Grande Valley is getting ready for all of the events happening this holiday season. One of the favorites is the Sandcastle Holiday Village on South Padre Island.
“South Padre Island has great sand for sandcastle building.” Says Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga.
She’s excited to bring back the Holiday Sandcastle Village to South Padre Island. This is the second year the island is showcasing these sand sculptures. Artists from all over the world come out to build them and many of them were already here for Sandcastle Days in October.
Wierenga says, “The sculptures were already here. We give them an extra week or two and many come from places where it’s already cold and uncomfortable so they enjoy being able to stay a little bit longer and work on a project like this.”
Santa’s Sandy Christmas Throne and Sandy Snowmen were all part of this year’s exhibit. Along with some new additions, like the Turtle Lady and the Peace Angel. Which is meant to inspire people to come together during the holidays.
“What we want is for everybody to come together to celebrate the holidays to celebrate peace and love and that’s really what Christmas is all about.” Says “Sandy Feet”.
The Holiday Sandcastle Village will include a light show with a musical performance. It will be located near Louie’s Backyard and Gravity Park. It is free and open to the public and will remain until Jan. 13.
