RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cities across the Rio Grande Valley are distributing sandbags in preparation as a tropical system inches closer toward the Valley.

City of McAllen

McAllen has begun distributing sandbags to area residents.

They will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the McAllen Recycling Center, 4101 N. Bentsen Road. Residents must show proof of residency, including a valid ID or a current utility bill.

Sandbag distribution will be self-serve and residents will be limited to six sandbags each and 12 for business.

Sandbags will be distributed until they run out.

City of Mission

Sandbag distributions will be held throughout the day.

The self-serve sandbag sites are as follows:

  • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Speer Memorial Library, located at 801 E 12th St.
  • Noon to 8 p.m. at Bannworth Park, located at 1822 N Sharrt Rd.
  • Noon to 8 p.m. at Jaycee Park, located at Los Ebanos Road & Barnes St.

The city is allowing six bags per household and 10 bags per business.

City of Penitas

The City of Peñitas will also be distributing sandbags today at noon at the Peñitas Fire Department, located on the corner of Main and Military Road.

Peñitas has a limit of four sandbags per household.

Hidalgo County Precinct 1

The county will be giving away sandbags at Sunrise Hill Park/Pct. 1 operations facility. It is located at 5230 Mile 11 North, Mercedes.

Hidalgo County Precinct 3

Precinct 3 will be distributing sandbags from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations:

  • La Mansion at 2401 N. Moorefield Rd. in Mission
  • Sullivan Substation at 1429 El Pinto Rd. in Sullivan City
  • La Homa Rd. & 107 at 2894 W. Mile Rd. in Mission

An ID is required and a limit of five sandbags per family. Call 956-585-4509.

Hidalgo County Precinct 4

Precinct 4 will distribute free sandbags on Monday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the M. Road Recovery Center located at 1124 N. M Road in Edinburg.

It is self-service, bags and sand will be provided as well as shovels and gloves. 8 bags per household and 10 bags per business will be allowed.

Proof of residency/business for Precinct 4 is required in the rural county area. Ready-made bags will be available for those over the age of 65 and/or handicapped.

City of Edinburg

Edinburg will begin its distribution on Aug. 21 from 1 to 7 p.m. and continue Tuesday, Aug. 22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Edinburg Service Center, weather permitting.

  • Must live within city limits
  • Bring proof of residency (ID & Utility Bill)
  • Six bags per household/10 per business
  • Unlimited sand if you bring your own bags 

The center is located at 1201 N. Doolittle Road.

City of Raymondville

Raymondville will begin its sandbag distribution on Aug. 21 from 3 to 8 p.m. and continue Tuesday, Aug. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon.

  • Proof of residency required (ID & Utility Bill)
  • Residents are encouraged to bring their own shovels
  • Six bags per household/10 per business

Sandbags are being distributed on the West side parking lot at City Hall.

City of Alamo

Alamo will begin distributing sandbags until 5 p.m. at Alamo City Hall. The Alamo Service center will be available for residents after hours from 5 to 6 p.m.

  • Proof of residency is required

Residents can fill their own bags at the Alamo Sports Complex, Alaniz Park and Balli Park.

City of Palmview

The City of Palmview is distributing sandbags to residents Aug. 21 from 3 to 7 p.m.

  • Proof of residency required
  • Residents get up to four bags. businesses can get up to six

The self-serve distribution is happening on the west side of Palmview City Hall.

City of Weslaco

Weslaco has sandbags available for residents at the northwest corner of city hall.

There is a limit of six bags per home and 12 per business.

If you bring your own sandbags you can fill them up at anytime.
