SAN JUAN, Texas — The first day of early voting in the city of San Juan is bringing some controversy. One candidate has filed a restraining order against his opponent. Markie Villegas filed the lawsuit against his opponent Pete Garcia. Both are running for San Juan City Commissioner Place 5.

In the suit Villegas contends that Garcia began distributing flyers containing false and defamatory statements. The flyers say that Villegas has an extensive criminal record which Villegas says is false.

What’s more Villegas’s attorney says that the flyers violated federal law. That’s because the unstamped flyers were placed in San Juan mailboxes. Villegas filed the temporary restraining order to get Garcia to stop spreading the false information.
