DONNA, Texas- As stay-at-home orders were lifted, many are desperate for a summer getaway.
With people still unsure about flying, RV dealerships are seeing a boom in business.
“We’ve definitely seen a spike in customers coming in looking for travel trailers just to quarantine themselves or even spend more time with their family,” said Johnny Rodriguez, a salesman for Ron Hoover RV & Marine in Donna.
Rodriguez said they’ve seen a 20% increase in RV purchases and the RV Industry Association reporting a 170% sales jump during the pandemic.
“It seems like it just keeps increasing as customers know that there’s something else that you can do besides traveling a plane or in a car,” said Rodriguez.
Many travelers are choosing to vacation with their families in RV’s and opting out of flying as a way to protect themselves from this pandemic.
“The customers that don’t feel safe traveling on the plane or being too close to other people they’ll definitely come in here and even workers, EMT’s, police officers, we’ve had them come in and pick up a travel trailer just to quarantine themselves before they go inside their house,” said Rodriguez.
With people fearful of going on airplanes Rodriguez said RVs give travelers the chance to practice social distancing while being in the comfort of their own motor home.
“When you’re flying you know you have a lot of people there, you’re really close together when you do something like a travel trailer you can spend more time with the family. It’s your own travel trailer, your own things, your own personal stuff that’s in there.”
For those still unsure about air travel, Rodriguez recommends buying or renting an RV to get back outdoors.
