Harlingen, Texas (KVEO) — The Texas Education Agency will distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to help Texas school systems reopen for the 2020-21 school year.

The distribution comes, after collaboration with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s strike force and the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

According to the TEA, 50,000,000 disposable masks have been ordered for students and staff, along with 40,000 thermometers, 10,000,000 gloves and 50,000 gallons of hand sanitizer.

Officials also have ordered 12,500,000 of reusable masks.

The agency reportedly calculated how much each district would get based on the number of staff and students who were on campus this past school year.

The school districts around the Valley will have a meeting with the TEA on Tuesday to determine how the distribution and use of the PPE will take place.

The district tells KVEO that the PPE allotments were calculated by using 2019-2020 student and on-campus staff counts and were allotted on a per pupil, district basis.

On-campus staff includes teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and auxiliary staff. PPE is expected to arrive between mid-July and early August.

School nurses will be tasked with distribution of PPE, as well as teaching for both students and staff about proper measures. As per TEA, students and staff will not be allowed in the school campus until they have been screened.

Students will also be required to have their temperature checked. Students and staff will have the option of completing part their screening electronically. Prior to entering, nurses with the assistance of several appointed staff, would issue PPE to students if they are not wearing a mask or face covering.
