Richard Moore Outdoor Report: Opening Day

Local News

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The most anticipated day on the hunting calendar is set for this coming Saturday. As Richard Moore explains, you can enjoy the coming White-tailed deer season with a rifle or camera.

When the bucks begin rubbing their antlers in the mesquite, it’s a sure sign that hunting season is drawing close.

Whether you are in the field with a rifle or a camera or both, there will be plenty of Texans joining you for the most anticipated date on the hunting calendar.

White-tailed deer season opens on Saturday, November 2nd and runs thru January 19th in South Texas.

More than 500,000 hunters are expected to take to the field statewide during the 2019-2020 hunting season, and there are plenty of deer to pursue as Texas has the largest herd in the nation at some 5.4 million whitetails.

Deer hunting is big business in Texas, and hunters annually spend approximately $2 billion in pursuit of their venison and antlers.  That figure includes retail sales on everything from camouflage clothing to ammunition, plus licenses, lease costs, deer feeders and the corn that goes in them.

If you don’t have access to a private lease or have not been fortunate enough to be selected for one of the limited hunting slots on local state or federal lands, then that doesn’t mean you can’t still hunt.  A growing number of outdoor enthusiasts are hunting deer with their cameras.

One of the best places to see and photograph deer is Port Mansfield. Much of the land around Port Mansfield is Navigation District property and is not open to hunting, but some is available for public access. Just remember to be courteous and ask permission before you step onto someone else’s property.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is another good place to see deer, but some areas will be closed during the upcoming hunting season.

The great thing about hunting with a camera is that you can hunt all year and there are no limits.
