Richard Moore Outdoor Report: Free Fishing Program

Local News

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – If you are interested in a fun and educational family activity this weekend, then the upcoming Free Fishing Program is taking registrations.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is offering a free fishing program to youth throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Chris Quezada, Lead Ranger at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge east of Rio Hondo, is directing the program.

“So what we are doing is a four week program, there is one group on Saturdays and one group on Sundays.  Every Saturday or every Sunday for the following four weeks they are going to be coming out to Laguna Atascosa and different locations that we have selected to get a feel for fishing in different habitats, different bodies of water, different ecosystems and see the kind of different fish species that you can find throughout here.”

Interested young anglers will learn fishing techniques and develop an appreciation for various aquatic habitats from freshwater to saltwater from local resacas to Bahia Grande.

Quezada says, “Even though we are gearing it towards youth participants, we want to have those parents involved just as much as the youth. So, even if it is a parent who has never fished before, this class is to combine that experience with both the parent and youth.”

If you are interested in learning more about the upcoming free fishing program that begins this Saturday November 16th then Chris Quezada is ready to sign you up.

Quezada adds, “If anybody is interested in participating in this program what they need to do is contact me at 956-245-1101 or at Christopher_Quezada@fws.gov for more information to enroll.
