RGV Vipers Hold Basketball Clinic

Local News

The RGV Vipers visited the Brownsville Sports Park for a basketball clinic.

It is a day where children have the opportunity to learn from professional athletes.

It may not have been a home court for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, but they made it their own. This was a game with a unique set of rules. Instead of the traditional practice, athletes spent time with their biggest fans.

Matt Brase, RGV Vipers Coach said, “We’ve got a great training camp and our guys are excited to get on the court for real this season.”

The RGV Vipers start their season this Sunday. But this clinic is all about the kids, it’s all about having fun.

Gary Payton, RGV Vipers Player, said, “They look up to us. It’s nice for us to come out here and give back.”

Despite their age, every child had the opportunity to take a few lessons.

“We teach them how to shoot. We teach them how to dribble, we teach them how to pass. Things like that. It touches our players’ hearts,” says Brase.

This was partially a Jr. NBA event. In short, this means the team spends time with the community. After speaking to some of the players, they say they too remember looking up to an athlete. They hope they can help inspire future generations.

“Always stick to your dreams, stick to the vision. You’re going to have bumps and bruises along the road and keep fighting. You will reach whatever you put in,” says Payton.

For those that could not make it to this practice the vipers have some advice for aspiring professionals.

“Just get a lot of shots up,” says Payton, “You can’t make the shots you don’t take. So have confidence. Keep trying and keep working.”

The Vipers start their season against the Reno Bighorns at the State Farm Arena.
