Yesterday morning, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Special Operations Detachment (SOD) deployed to Atlanta, Georgia, to stage for the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence.

SOD operators from RGV, joined by personnel from multiple Department of Homeland Security (DHS) components, are making preparations to respond to areas that will be affected by the massive storm system. Agents assigned to the SOD, which consists of the Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR), and the Mobile Response Team (MRT), possess specialized skillsets in search and rescue, recovery, rapid deployment, and tactical operations that will assist in DHS’ response to the storm.

“Our deployed agents will focus on rescue efforts and assist in the federal response to Hurricane Florence and her aftermath,” said Chief Patrol Agent Manuel Padilla, Jr. “We will remain in the affected areas as long as needed.”
