BROWNSVILLE, Texas – As Local 23 continues to share the Remarkable Women in the Rio Grande Valley, we introduce you to a sister who put her life on the line to help take the pain away of someone she loves deeply. A poem describing the challenges and sacrifices a sister has made in her life.
Nancy Escalante was nominated by her sister Naila Macias who wrote a poem to describe her.
For Nancy family is everything. When her sister needed her she was always there. Nancy donated her kidney to her sister and says it’s something any sibling would do.
“You know I’ve never asked her to thank me, it’s my duty, it’s my sister, it’s something I did for her.” said Nancy.
Nancy’s sister was suffering from kidney problems and was constantly in pain. Without hesitation Nancy stepped up and donated her kidney. She says she never thinks twice about being there for her sister.
“She was always in pain and so I just, the doctor said she needed a kidney and you know I was the first one to volunteer. I was like she is my only sister and I mean yeah I just did it. I mean it’s not a big deal.”
It may not be a big deal for Nancy but donating her kidney saved her sister’s life and took her pain away. Which is all Nancy ever wanted.
“She was just in pain for so long that when she got that kidney, it was a drastic change in her life. It really did improve her lifestyle and you know at least she doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.”
Through thick and thin. The good times and the bad, Nancy says her and her sister will always be there for each other.
“She’s like a second mother, always watching out for me, always being there for me.”
