Reef project underway at South Padre Island

Local News

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – A big deployment is underway for the creation of an artificial reef off the coast of South Padre Island.

For the next 30 days, the Friends of RGV Reef will be dropping hundreds of tons of railroad ties.  Their goal is to create a habitat for fish in an area larger than 1,600 acres. For a reference that is larger than the city of South Padre Island.

Curtis Hayungs, Friends of RGV Reef, “This boat has a global positioning satellite system where the boat will not move within 3 feet. We’re basically making a 200-ton pile here. Then we’re going to make another 200-ton pile a little bit further down the reef.”

Tune in Wednesday night as Local 23’s Alfredo Cuadros brings us more about the project and what impact it is already having in the region.
