Some lawmakers and members of Texas’s medical community are divided on a proposal to stop surprise medical bills.
Today the senate business and commerce committee heard testimony over a bill that would prevent patients from getting expensive bills for care they thought would be covered by insurance.
Right now, it’s up to patients to fight that bill.
Senator Kelly Hancock’s bill aims to take the patient out of the equation in billing disputes and would leave that up to the provider and health plan.
“It’s time for more protections in these types of situations where patients do not have a real choice or the ability to protect themselves from the bills they never knew were coming.” Says Senator Kelly Hancock.
However, some doctors believe the proposal misses the root of the issue. They say health plans leave a lot of providers out of network, causing higher bills.
