A pilot project in Weslaco will offer free meals for kids — provided by two new vending machines.
Located at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border Ave., the vending machines provide free meals to local children who register for the pilot project.
The PepsiCo Food for Good program provided the meals and a charity called Share Our Strength financed the project. It’s a first in Texas.
“Share our strength is collecting all the data up in Washington, D.C., and the idea then is to take that data to lawmakers and see if we can pass this for future sites,” said Debra Franco, a child hunger outreach specialist with the Texas Hunger Initiative.
The meals include milk and cereal for breakfast, and three different sandwiches for lunch.
