Police investigate K-9 death

The McAllen Police Department dispatched officers to 2400 Block of North I Street  in response to a Request Officer Call-For-Service.  At arrival, officers determined that caller was a San Juan Police employee and that the San Juan employee reported that he had left a police K-9 unattended in a police unit. 

Responding Officers determined that the San Juan employee was a San Juan Police Officer, the police K-9 was assigned to him as was the police unit where the police K-9 had been left unattended.  The dog, a Belgian Malinois, had died by the time responding officer’s had arrived on scene. 

As part of this investigation, the McAllen Police Department has referred the deceased canine for a necropsy (animal autopsy).

On June 3, 2016 a warrant of arrest was issued for the San Juan Police employee who was identified as Officer Juan Luis Cerrillo Jr.

On June 4, 2016 Juan Luis Cerrillo Jr, 37 years of age, last known address in McAllen was arrested and arraigned on the charge of Cruelty to Nonlivestock Animals a Class “A” Misdemeanor. His bond was set at $4,000 personal recognizance bond.
