WESLACO, Texas – A Weslaco Police officer shoots a domestic violence suspect in the late hours of Sunday evening.
Local 23 News spoke with the wife of Jose Luis Sandoval, 53, who confirmed her husband was shot by police after he stabbed her and fled the scene.
The shooting follows a terrifying evening for Sandoval’s wife, who showed LOCAL 23 the defense wounds on her body. Sandoval’s right eye is swolen shut, has cuts on her arms and a stab wound on her left side, “I have stitches on my hands from where I was holding the knife by the blade.” she said.
On the condition LOCAL 23 would not film, Sandoval’s wife showed where her husband broke down a bedroom door and the blood splatter across the floor of their living room.
According to Sandoval’s wife and daughter, after the stabbing, “he left to get a gun” at some point in the evening Sandoval came back to their apartment where officers were investigating the initial call for service.
Officers responded to the 9-1-1 call, made by a neighbor, to their apartment at 807 East Washington Street shortly after 11:00 PM. “We can’t discuss the shooting” said Eric Hernandez, a spokesperson with the Weslaco Police Department. Hernandez did confirm the call for service was a domestic violence incident and Sandoval is the suspect in custody.
Sandoval crashed his late model white Chevy Impala into a tree in front of his apartment. It’s unclear how and at what time he was shot by Weslaco Police. He remains hospitalized with charges pending from the domestic violence investigation. The name of the officer has not been released. More details are expected throughout the day.
