DPS is investigating a major crash on U.S. 281 north of F.M. 490.
According to DPS, an Hidalgo County Sheriff’s unit attempted to stop a driver on a green 2004 Ford Explorer, occupied by five people, for a traffic violation Wednesday morning.
The driver of the Ford stopped and as the deputy attempted to make contact, the driver evaded him.
The Ford continued traveling northbound on U.S. 281 then made a turn-around traveling southbound on U.S. 281, according to DPS.
The driver then lost control of the Ford and veered off the roadway and hit a tree.
One passenger was flown to DHR.
Four others were transported to local hospitals with major injuries.
DPS Troopers are currently on scene.
