The City of Brownsville will join organizers from KaBOOM! (a national nonprofit dedicated to ensuring all kids get a childhood filled with balanced and active play) at Prax Orive Jr. Park, also known as Sunrise Park, on Friday, August 14, 2015, to kick off design plans for a one-of-a-kind playground.
As part of the “Build It With KaBOOM!” playground grant opportunity, the customized playground will be funded primarily by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and will be created with personal drawings and other input from local community members – especially children – collected during this special design day.
Design Day will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015. A playground site walk will take place at Prax Orive Jr. Park from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by a children’s meeting from 4 to 5 p.m. and an adults’ meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cummings Middle School, 1800 Cummings Place, Brownsville, Texas 78250. The children’s meeting will require the participation of at least 20 children and the adult meeting will require the participation of 20 to 30 adults.
The existing playground equipment at Prax Orive Jr. Park is outdated and in need of replacement. The new playground will address these needs, providing youth with an age-appropriate area to play.
“We are so pleased to be awarded this “Build It With KaBOOM!” playground grant and we are excited to work with our new funding partner, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas,” said Brownsville City Manager Charlie Cabler. “Our city cares about the children that live in and visit our community, and it’s amazing to be able to partner with a private company that shares our passion to promote health through play.”
“Being able to build something with my own two hands for my children and the community is an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Jesus Lopez, a community member. “Thanks to the City of Brownsville, KaBOOM!, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, our children will be able to enjoy this new playground for many years to come.”
Design Day will kick off CycloBia Nights in Downtown Brownsville where Prax Orive Jr. Park will serve as a reclovia area to include the City’s Mobile Recreation Unit, games, and activities for families and children. CycloBia Nights will immediately follow Design Day from 7 to 11 p.m.
The actual playground Build Day will take place in November 2015.
