Pharr Expects Large Economic Impact From Multi Million Dollar Investment

Local News

The director of the Pharr Economic Development Corporation reported that produce imports from Mexico are expected to grow by 32 percent by 2023.

Today the city announced that they will have a 52 million dollar investment that is expected to have a large impact on the local economy.

This is an investment that they hope will pay off 117 million for the city of Pharr.

Mayor of Pharr Ambrosio Hernandez says, “today we announced the private investment of 52 million dollars with the financial impact of 117 million dollars to the city and also the creation of 177 jobs for the citizens of Pharr.”

Along with this venture, the mayor says that an internship program for local students is planned to promote education. But why not fund educations directly instead of produce?

“We’re not in the business of giving our taxes away for growth. We will absolutely incentivize them as long as we both grow together. Also as we grow and our general fund increases, we have more tax dollars to utilize for the citizens of Pharr,” says Mayor Hernandez.

It is said that 177 jobs will be created by this multi-million dollar investment, but what types of jobs are we creating? And who is hiring?

PSJA Superintendent Dr. Daniel P. King says jobs will more than likely be related to the companies invested. He states “You’re talking about logistics, you’re talking about shipping and receiving. Of course you are also talking about people that unload and load the trucks and sort.”

I spoke with Interenlace, one of the companies invested in this 52 million, and their representative said jobs may even come from locals who create businesses that cater to international trade.

“This is a great time to be a young person in the valley. We see huge opportunity opening up and it is really important that our young people prepare themselves. That they start looking at what career they want to go into. And most of all that they continue their education. Beyond high school,” says King.

It is said that the first stages of the job creation may be seen in the construction of cold storage facilities within the next few months.
