Parking facility opens in Brownsville

Local News

The city of Brownsville opened a new parking facility on Wednesday.

The new four level facility has 190 parking spaces and will be open 24-hours every day.

“It took a lot of community effort. public hearings side review committees and things like that to get this done,” Brownsville city Manager Charlie Cabler said.

It’s the start to rebuilding downtown Brownsville.

“Last night the commission approved the downtown revitalization of our market square,” Cabler said.

The new parking facility is next to Brownsville Metro, UTRGV and the border of Mexico.

“Really from my stand point of view this is the gateway into downtown from not only Mexico but the university through out the city of Brownsville so this is really a dream come true,”  Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez said.

The parking garage is one of the many projects the mayor says they are working on.

“If you notice on the right hand side over here by the ally way those utilities have gone under ground we will be going under ground all the way to the city plaza,” Martinez said.

What will go in the ally ways?

“Those ally ways that we now see as places to pick up the trash will become walk ways through the university to the city plaza,” Martinez said.

The new facility will help create more parking spaces for retail and business offices downtown.
