Over $58 million in disaster recovery for Cameron and Hidalgo Counties

Local News

WESLACO, Texas – Millions of dollars coming to Hidalgo and Cameron counties for damages due to recent floods. U.S. Senator John Cornyn announcing the disaster recovery grant will help those affected.

“Federal government is giving us monies and funds to help rebuild and help prevent future floods.”

Over $58 million will be distributed across Hidalgo County for disaster recovery from the 2018 floods. Precinct 1 Commissioner, David Fuentes says the county can possibly receive even more.

“There may be a component where people can apply for monies to help rebuild their homes that were damaged. There will also be most likely a mitigation portion of it which allows us to provide some sort of project that will help relieve or prevent future disasters.”

Cameron County will also receive its fair share. Over $170 million will be distributed among eight counties for damages in 2019. But that money still doesn’t have a final destination.

“We still don’t know because they haven’t determined what the rules will be and how this money will be disseminated. Whether it’s in the form of rebuilding or in mitigation, we’re going to see a benefit to our people.” said Commissioner Fuentes.

Once the funds are received, the focus will be flood mitigation.

“That would be in the form of either putting pumps at the IBWC structures, creating regional detention facilities, widening ditches, creating new reservoirs. We will be trying to create capacity somewhere, somehow.”

Funds are expected to be distributed sometime within the year.
