PHARR – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD is retrofitting 119 school buses with Wi-Fi technology. It will provide internet access up to a quarter-mile radius from where they are parked. The said it is part of their commitment to continue educating more than 32,000 students during the 2020-2021 school year despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Installation of this technology is happening this week and will continue next week.

Early in May, the PSJA ISD School Board of Trustees approved $808,000 in funding to purchase computers for students and equip buses with Wi-Fi. The district said they spent $155,888.81 to equip the buses with broadband connectivity to create Wi-Fi hotspots that could be easily deployed to targeted areas lacking internet access, said the district’s press release.
