One of McAllen’s most notable and historic buildings is set for demolition.
The McAllen Civic Center site will be torn down to make room for a new 14-acre retail center, despite efforts from a few residents to preserve the historical site.
City officials expect the demolition to be completed by December 16th or sooner. The performances that were usually hosted at this site will now be at the new Performing Arts Center that is currently under construction.
Yvette Barrera, City Engineer says, “There was a decision made by the city commission with citizen input, to relocate the civic center site to the new location where our performing arts center is being constructed by the convention center. It was a lengthy process to arrive at that.”
City officials say the demolition of the civic center drive won’t affect any surrounding traffic.
