Officials with TxDOT and the city of Port Isabel are working to deter traffic as the causeway leading to and from South Padre Island is shut down.
Authorities say the barriers on the causeway went down after something triggered the barriers but are unsure what caused the safety precaution.
Port Isabel Police Chief Robert Lopez says his department is waiting on TxDOT to determine the cause of the shutdown.
TxDOT officials say the causeway should reopen within the next hour.
