Number Of Separated Families Unknown

Local News

A new government report says thousands more children than previously thought were separated from their parents at our southern border.

The report was issued by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and was the result of a class-action lawsuit filed last summer.

The OIG found the total number of children separated from a parent or guardian by immigration authorities is unknown.

While HHS has previously identified more than 2,700 children in its care, the report states that thousands more may have been separated from their parents starting in the summer of 2017.

That was before the formal announcement of the Zero-Tolerance Policy.

The report could not determine a precise number of separated children other than “thousands.”
