HARLINGEN, Texas- As food donations are happening all across the Rio Grande Valley, one local organization is bringing grocery baskets to thousands of families in need of food.
Communities across Texas have been hit hard during this pandemic.
The nonprofit organization Love Soldiers is getting ready to launch a food donation drive to help families in need.
“One United RGV is a donation drive throughout 18 cities in 10 days for 10,000 people. We are going to be donating over 5,500 mixed fruit and vegetable baskets,” said Perla Tamez, founder of Love Soldier.
With thousands of people losing their jobs and being tight on money, Tamez organized this food drive to make it easier for families to feed themselves and their loved ones.
“Now that COVID-19 happened, they lost their jobs and they lost that security,” said Tamez. “Now they have to budget for three meals a day for every child or family member in the family and it just has been very hard for them.”
Tamez is partnering up with two other local nonprofits, Hispanic Star and Here Everybody Loves People (HELP) to bring these grocery baskets to the community.
The donation drive is set to take place starting on Friday, May 1 until Monday May 11.
Tamez explains what you need to bring to receive a grocery basket.
“The residents bring a valid ID or a light bill, or a phone bill with their address that pertains to that city because we want everybody to have a fair ability to be able to go to the drive.”
The 18 cities participating in this donation are listed on the One United RGV website, as well as times for the distributions.
